Have you got green fingers and are keen on finding volunteering opportunities? If so, look no further.

Puketāpapa Local Board has teamed up with Matt Johnson from Sport Auckland, to help several schools in the local board area with community gardens and vegetable patches that need regular upkeep.

Through his work with Mt Roskill schools as part of the Healthy Active Learning programme, Matt identified a need for more community support with the gardens on school grounds.

“The need at every garden varies from school to school. Some just want someone to help weed, water and plant, while others have expressed interest in community members helping to teach their tamariki as well,” he says.

Matt did a shoutout on Facebook to highlight the opportunity and the post was spotted by the local board, which realised the need aligned perfectly with its commitment to creating healthy, connected and thriving neighbourhoods.

“This is a key outcome in our three-year Puketāpapa Local Board Plan, with a focus on initiatives, projects, programmes and investments that create opportunities for people to connect and contribute locally in meaningful and positive ways,” says local board chair Julie Fairey.

“Community gardening is a great way for people to connect and give to each other, as well as getting active. We’re delighted to work with Sport Auckland to help them bring people together and support our schools at the same time.”

If you would like to volunteer, email Matt at matthew@sportauckland.co.nz who will connect you with the schools involved.
