The plan change includes the Formosa golf course and large parcels along Whitford-Maraetai Road.

A private plan change is being sought for more than 300 hectares of Beachlands land that would allow 3000-plus homes to be built.

Auckland Council’s Planning, Environment and Parks committee accepted a private plan change request in December that opens the plan change up for submissions.

Beachlands South Limited Partnership’s request would rezone 307 hectares at Jack Lachlan Drive and along Whitford-Maraetai Road to a mix of business, residential, open space and future urban zones.

Franklin Ward Councillor Andy Baker says Formosa and 11 rural properties are included in the request, which mostly covers undeveloped pasture.

“Beachlands has grown quickly, and infrastructure issues have come to light in the wake of that rapid growth.

The former Franklin Local Board chair says the board has been advocating for a secondary school for some time.

“The number of school buses driving hundreds and hundreds of kids out of the area every day is crazy. If the change goes through, and the housing eventuates, it could be a great opportunity to address infrastructure issues, including that school.”

Current Board Chair Angela Fulljames says it’s important people get involved in the process by making submissions., which are open until 25 February.

“The committee’s decision to accept the plan change request opens the application up for the public to have their say.

“It’s important the public does that, because debate about growth in the area, particularly around the fate of Formosa, has been going on for a long time, and if this proceeds, it will bring major changes to the area – both positive and negative depending on your viewpoint.”

You can make a submission on the private plan change request until February 24.

More Information can be found here, where you can also submit via email. Postal submissions to Planning Technician, Auckland Council, Level 24 135 Albert Street, Private Bag 92300, Auckland 1142.
