A further 19 parks in Henderson-Massey will now carry dual Māori / English names. This adds to the list of parks that already carry dual names adopted by Henderson-Massey Local Board in signing up to the Te Kete Rukuruku programme.
The programme aims to reclaim Māori identity and restore mana and mauri (life force) to the whenua (land), through the restoration of the Māori language, traditional names and associated narratives.
The names reflect the richness of the area’s local history and are a way for te reo Māori to be seen, heard, learned, and spoken. This is in line with the local board’s ongoing commitment to preserving local heritage.
“We’re incredibly honoured to have received these names. Through them, we can share our rich history and heritage with everyone,” says Henderson-Massey Local Board Chairperson Chris Carter.
“This is a way for us to embrace our heritage and keep pace with the resurgence in learning and celebrating te reo Māori.”
The names are put forward by mana whenua. They may be connected to the site in some way, through a cultural activity or a landscape feature or reflect Māori history. An ancestral name may be returned in some instances.
Henderson-Massey Local Board adopted additional names at their recent business meeting.
