The lingering effects of yesterday’s rainfall and flooding should be minor for most people, but gusty winds, showers and a cold snap are in store for Aucklanders on Thursday.
Auckland remains in a State of Local Emergency with the following updates for people affected by Tuesday’s rainfall and flooding.
People and Welfare
Seven Community Emergency Hubs resourced by community organisations were established across the region on Tuesday, but six were closed on Tuesday night due to no further community need.
Te Manawa in Westgate has remained open today as a Civil Defence Centre, but will close from 6pm tonight due to no further community need.
Property Assessments
32 teams of two Auckland Council Rapid Building Inspectors were deployed around the region today. The building inspectors expect to complete the assessment of all 283 pre-identified properties today. Of the rapid assessments carried out, five properties have been yellow stickered and 207 have been assessed as having no or minor damage. No properties have been red-stickered.
Insurance and Lodging a Claim
If your home, business or contents have been damaged due to flooding, take photos before you remove or repair anything, and report it to your insurance company as soon as possible. Your insurer will let you know what you need to do next and how to claim.
Council Facilities
Most council facilities are open again as usual from Thursday 11 May 2023. Regional parks are all open. Any tracks on reserve land that are found to be unsafe will be closed.
Any damage to parks or open spaces should be reported for action to the council’s Report a Problem tool.
Roading and Transport
Auckland Transport report that 4 road closures remain in place across the region. There has been no further major disruption to public transport services. There are more details on the Auckland Transport website.
Rainfall and Weather Outlook
Rainfall totals for the 9 May 2023 event were approximately half of that of Cyclone Gabrielle. MetService is forecasting further showers, some heavy, with possibly squally thunderstorms and hail this evening. Strong westerlies are also forecast in exposed places.
Yesterday’s summary of rainfall saw 111 mm recorded at Whenuapai Airbase, 107 mm at Harmel Road, Waitakere and 97 mm at Waiatarua. 86mm of rain was also recorded at Aotea Great Barrier Island.

Private land: for properties impacted by recent flooding and the disposal of damaged items, phone 0800 22 22 00.
