Plant a tree at Te Kori Scott Point

Locals wanting a sneak peek at Te Kori Scott Point are invited to a community planting event that also celebrates Matariki and takes place on Saturday, 22 July.

Upper Harbour Local Board Chair Anna Atkinson says the timing is fantastic as residents welcome the Māori new year and the new park takes shape.

“It’s been a full year since earthworks started but surely and steadily, tinges of green are starting to appear in the park. The large tracts of grass growing in the informal recreation areas really emphasise the area’s size.

“The planting day is a wonderful opportunity for the Scott Point community to get together, celebrate Matariki and help plant some of the many plants that will provide life to the park.

“We are so grateful that locals love to volunteer and look after the environment. They are generous with their time and willing to give back to their community.”

Community planting day

The planting day runs from 10am-12.30pm and volunteers should enter the park from Squadron Drive using the car park entrance opposite Skua Road. With the car park under construction and closed, parking is limited so it may be easier to walk or cycle to the event.

Volunteers are asked to wear closed toe shoes, bring a spade if they have one and kai will be provided after their mahi.

Work on the first stage of the park is progressing well with the new toilet and changing facility, which was built off site in four separate pieces, recently craned into place.

Park progress

  • The new toilet and changing room facility has been installed. Cladding on the building is made from 100 per cent recycled materials. As well as looking good, it is resistant to warping and won’t need painting. Solar panels will power the facility with extra power directed back into the grid.
  • Two sports fields are ready to be sown with grass in spring.
  • Paths and cycleways are being concreted and the decorative nodes will be completed in coming months.
  • A wetland area shaped around the natural aquifer is being planted this winter.
  • The baseball diamond’s playing surface will be laid in July.
  • Joshua Carder Drive and Craig’s Way extensions will be sealed over winter. A new roundabout linking the roads, footpaths and cycleways are also taking shape.
