Making grants available to local groups remains an Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board priority.
Applications are open now in response to the community’s call for grants to be protected despite reduced board funding, chair Apulu Reece Autagavaia says.
“Locals told us to protect grant funding and we’re proud to have set aside a significant budget for grants our community can apply for.”
The grants programme is targeted at supporting making Manukau an attractive visitor destination, business centre and place to shop, live, learn, work and play in; creating a prosperous economy and an inclusive and safe community; having parks and facilities that meet people's needs, a sustainable, healthy natural environment, and having a connected area that’s easy to get around.
Autagavaia says applications around having a healthy environment and addressing climate change, where large numbers of group members are local, or that have positive outcomes for mana whenua receive priority.
“That’s based on community feedback, so applicants need to show they will meet the outcomes asked for by our people.”
Grants allow the board to support community-led initiatives and create positive change in the community, support that in the 2022-23 financial year saw $325,762.90 shared by 109 groups.
“We don’t have a monopoly on great ideas. Locals know locals best, and that’s why we’re keen to re-direct our funding through contestable grants. I’d encourage people to make use of that.”
