It’s more important than ever that residents speak up and let Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board know if the three-year plan, still open for consultation, is right for the community.

The board has prepared a draft plan that will guide its decision-making in Māngere-Ōtāhuhu over the next three years on things like parks and playgrounds, community funding and group support, as well as events and programmes.

Now the board wants to hear from residents and is asking them to fill out the simple online form at akhaveyoursay.govt.nz/localboardplans by 14 August.

Chair Tauanu’u Nick Bakulich says the draft signals the need to support the community doing its own mahi, and trust in its ability to know what works and what doesn’t.

“The challenge is that we don’t have millions of dollars, so we need to find other ways to get things done. Our commitment to that remains, and the hard work to make it happen starts.

“We’re committed to finding better ways to engage with our communities.”

Bakulich says the plan continues to ensure mana whenua voices are part of decision-making to achieve good outcomes for the community, tell the area’s history and stories in public, and celebrate its Māori identity.

“Our diversity is our strength. It makes us culturally rich. We want to make sure our communities, including our Pacific, ethnic, young, senior, and disabled, have a voice.”

The plan includes five key areas – people, community, environment, places and transport, with key objectives the board wants to see delivered listed under each.

Bakulich says the plan also guides local investment and advocacy for what communities need.

“This draft is about acknowledging the challenges of the past and present, while committing a plan of action for the future.”

“We believe council and the local board has an important role to play in the future of Māngere-Ōtāhuhu. It will require focus, commitment, partnership, and advocacy.”
