Lynfield Tennis and Mt Albert Rugby League Football clubs are among 18 sports organisations across the region awarded a funding boost to improve facilities.

The local clubs received a combined total of $387,000 in the latest round of council’s Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund which awarded $13 million in funding in the latest round.

With $17,000 awarded, Lynfield Tennis Club is putting funds towards resurfacing its courts; and Mt Albert Football Club received $370,000 which will contribute towards upgrading changing rooms and renewing its roof.

Mt Albert Rugby League Club was also recently awarded $30,000 by Albert-Eden Local Board as part of the board’s Sport and Active Recreation Facilities Plan, which contributed towards their fire safety upgrade and an elevator.

Albert-Eden-Puketāpapa Ward Councillor Julie Fairey is pleased grants were awarded to local clubs, which are pivotal to the community.

“Investments in our sport and recreation network enable people to connect with each other, give their time and knowledge, as well as providing opportunities to be active and learn."
“Both of these local clubs are key touchstones in their neighbourhoods and our area will benefit from their improved facilities,” says Councillor Fairey.

Fellow Ward Councillor, Christine Fletcher says the investment nurtures our relationship with local clubs and organisations and assists with the growing demand for sporting opportunities.

“It acknowledges the necessity of non-council facilities in the sector and is an opportunity to encourage more people to join their local sporting network,” says Councillor Fletcher.

How funding is allocated

This year $13,040,000 of funding was distributed across 18 organisations. These recipients were chosen by the independent assessment panel from a total group of 47 applicants.

Projects which will serve communities of the greatest need were prioritised for funding, in line with Auckland Council’s Long-term Plan 2021-2031.

Next funding round 2024/2025

Stage 1 applications for the 2024/2025 funding round are due to open in November 2023. We encourage sport and recreation organisations to read the funding guidelines PDF to understand whether they could be eligible to apply.
