West Coast residents who have been allowed back into their homes can dispose of flood or landslide damaged household items for free at the Waitākere Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station. To do so, you will need to get pre-approval for disposal by calling 0800 22 22 00. (This offer only applies to residents who have been granted re-entry to their homes since 28 August). You will need to provide your address so we can confirm it is within affected areas. Please note that you can drop off a maximum of two trailer loads of flood related household goods. However, flood or landslide damaged building materials (e.g. plasterboard) will incur a cost.

Community Recycling Centres, located across the region, can also take a variety of undamaged household goods. Check the Auckland Council website to see what items can be repurposed or recycled, and their locations. Charges may apply.

Reminder: Refrigerators, freezers and heat pumps need to be degassed before disposal. This typically happens at a transfer station or scrap metal dealers. Please do not try to remove the refrigeration mechanisms for the scrap metal, as this allows refrigerants (a harmful greenhouse gas) to escape.
