The Manurewa Community Recycling Centre, a cornerstone in South Auckland's Zero Waste efforts, is marking its first birthday this weekend with a whānau-friendly party for the community, and there's much to celebrate.
Operated by the Beautification Trust with support from Auckland Council, the centre has fast become a much-loved Zero Waste hub for the South Auckland community. The centre is not just a place to drop off unwanted items; it's a community space where education and action meet.
In its first nine months alone, a whopping 78,800kg of waste was diverted from landfill. This was made possible through sales at the on-site Reuse Store, volunteers repairing and upcycling items, and materials repurposed by dedicated recycling partners.
"These numbers represent our commitment to the environment and the incredible support from our community," said Daniel Barthow, Beautification Trust CEO. "This is just the beginning. We are expanding our waste programmes and engaging more of our community in the Zero Waste kaupapa."
The centre’s Reuse Store has also become a magnet for second-hand bargain hunters. From furniture to clothing, the store offers a wide range of quality, pre-loved items looking for a new home. Some shoppers' hauls have even gone viral on TikTok.
“The Trust might have been born out of a desire to battle graffiti, but it has become so much more,” said Manurewa-Papakura Auckland Councillor, Angela Dalton.
“It’s grown to include an astonishing range of services, including the Community Recycling Centre, and shows no sign of slowing down. The Centre has stopped countless items from becoming landfill in today’s throwaway society. I might visit myself and find a new outfit for the birthday party.”
“You need only look to this year’s 2degrees Auckland Business Awards, where the Trust is a finalist for community contribution, innovation, employer of the year and people’s choice,” said Cr Dalton.
“That does not happen by accident, it happens because of the passion, determination and commitment of all those involved.”
The centre’s first-year festivities, running throughout the day on Saturday 4 November, will commemorate its achievements and serve as a thank you to the whole community for their support.
Highlights of the day include the Reuse Store’s popular $5 Fill-A-Bag clothing sale, live music, fun games, birthday cake, and a free sausage sizzle from 12pm until 2pm. The Beautification Trust welcomes everyone to attend and celebrate.
