A concept plan for a more accessible and inclusive playground with shade at Rānui Domain has been approved by Henderson-Massey Local Board.
The Rānui Domain playground upgrade, to which the Board has allocated $934,159, will increase play opportunities for tamariki (children) from toddlers to 12 years old, and make the park more enjoyable for all members of the whānau.
The concept plan features accessible and inclusive play, with wet pour surfacing providing access to various play elements which can be used by wheelchair users.
Henderson-Massey Local Board chair Chris Carter says: “The current Rānui Playground has been serving the community for a long time now, and I’m very pleased to see the playground become bigger and better and a facility loved by the locals for many years to come.
“Our amazing Parks and Community Facilities team will add accessible and inclusive play items for the playground, ensuring all children will feel included into the wider play space. This will encourage more understanding and acceptance of children with different abilities.
“We’ve also added seats with backs and arms for all members of the whānau within the play area. There’ll be shade over picnic tables and water play area where our kids can stay longer.
“There has been a growing demand for accessible playgrounds within the Henderson-Massey rohe (territory). As a board we’re excited to deliver an asset that will become a destination for all of our Henderson-Massey locals at Rānui Domain.
Community and mana whenua feedback on the proposed plan was highly positive earlier this year, with 86.1% submissions supporting the plan.
Applying for consent and developing a detailed design is the next step. Construction work is expected to start in early September 2024.
