Manurewa Local Board Chair Glenn Murphy is taking compassionate leave to focus on ongoing family well-being concerns.

Deputy Chair Matt Winiata will take over.

Winiata was to have stepped into the role in April, when Murphy would have served the first 18-months of the board’s three-year term, leaving Winiata to serve the second half.

“I am taking a period of leave to focus on my family’s well-being,” Murphy says.

“For some time my family has been confronted with a number of serious health and well-being issues, which continue to require my attention.

“While I work as an elected official, I am first and foremost a husband, father and grandfather, and I need to prioritise my family’s very best well-being at this time.”

“To allow me to do that, I have requested arrangements be put in place for Matt to be acting chair with full delegations until further notice.”

Murphy will return to his responsibilities as an elected member as soon as is possible.

Winiata says Murphy has strong support for his decision. “He has always done his best for the community but that has to be put aside so he can be there for his family.”
