It’s a case of all change, yet more of the same for Manurewa Local Board when acting chair Matt Winiata takes the role permanently until the end of the board term next year.
Winiata has been acting chair since Glenn Murphy took a compassionate leave of absence to deal with personal matters earlier this year.
Murphy is now set to return and will take the deputy chair’s role, now being filled by board member Anne Candy, who will remain on the board.
“It will be good to have Glenn back,” Winiata says. “He has always made a valuable contribution, though he had to stand down briefly to focus on family matters, and we all understood that. Nothing is more important than family.”
From the start of the board’s term, it was planned that the pair would share the chair’s role, Murphy taking the first half of the term with Winiata as his deputy, with the roles reversed for the second half of the term.
“I’d also like to thank Whaea Anne Candy for her willingness to step up and act as deputy at the board’s time of need. You can rely on her, given her extensive experience, to provide sound support.”
Murphy says he’s looking forward to continuing his work supporting the community.
“I trust I’ll be able to provide the same support Matt has given me, not only during my time as chair, but also while I was away. The support my community and colleagues were able to give me was invaluable during a trying time, though now it’s time to continue the board’s important work and I’m excited for that, with great projects coming up.”
Local board business meetings are open to the public and Winiata will chair the next meeting at the board’s Hill Road offices on Thursday 2 May at 1.30pm. The agenda is here.
