Call on grants funds reflects tough times

A grant was made to enable Plunket to continue its car seat safety plans in the area.

The call on Manurewa Local Board’s grants funding continues to far outstrip its funding capability.

In the latest funding round almost as many organisations were declined because the fund was oversubscribed or they were ineligible, as received grants.

Fifteen organisations were declined and only four more, a total of 19, were successful, those groups sharing in a $67,000 funding allocation.

It’s a trend that continues to concern board chair Matt Winiata.

“Normally we would be talking about being able to help the groups that we have been able to back, but this time nobody has received all that they asked for, and we are seeing increasing numbers of applications from ineligible groups.

“That doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy, some of them are doing terrific work but they just do not meet our eligibility criteria.

“It is a very real concern because almost all the groups are made up of or are run by volunteers whose only interest is in serving the community.

“It’s said that New Zealand is run by volunteers and that the place would grind to a halt without the work they, do, and it is obvious that groups everywhere, not just here in Manurewa, are struggling to get the funds that they need.”

Despite those concerns there was funding for whānau activation programmes at Randwick Park, costs for a Pride Project community event at Clendon, and to Plunket for child car restraints for Manurewa families in need.

Successful applicants are here.
