Game, set and match to Patumahoe Tennis Club.

Franklin Local Board has agreed to give the club ownership of the building at John Street, artificial court surfaces, lights, posts, nets and boundary fences – and has even thrown in the umpire’s chair.

Board chair Angela Fulljames says the club is a vital part of life in the rapidly expanding village.

“It is a good facility that volunteers already put a lot of time into, and this move, coupled with a new ground lease for the land at the War Memorial Domain Reserve, effectively means the club takes on the responsibility for maintenance.”

The new lease is for a 10-year term with one 10-year right of renewal, giving an expiry on 31 October 2044.

“Patumahoe Tennis Club will take over the ownership, maintenance and renewal of the building, courts and equipment.

“Auckland Council’s asset register doesn’t include any of the assets associated with the tennis club site because the assets were not included in the transfer from Franklin District Council to Auckland Council at the time of amalgamation in 2010,” Fulljames says.

“That means there is no book value for the assets, but it will tidy up an arrangement that perhaps was missed, and it’s a good outcome going forward.”

There are eight tennis clubs with community leases across Franklin, seven now own, maintain and renew the assets on council-administered land.

Council staff have assessed the Patumahoe clubhouse and courts as needing renewal, being in a below average condition with signs of deterioration.

The club was established in 1913 as the hub for tennis in the Patumahoe, Mauku, Glenbrook and Waiau Pa areas, and its courts are also used by other codes for all-weather training.
