The curtain is about to be raised on works to prepare for installation of the new Panmure Basin bridge for pedestrians, scooters and bikes.

Construction of Panmure’s long-awaited replacement bridge is in full swing off-site and on-site activity begin this month until completion of the project, which is expected in May 2025.

Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board chair Maria Meredith is thrilled with this progress.

“We are very excited that Panmure’s bridge is finally coming to life,” she says.

“Even though a lot of work has taken place behind the scenes, it is incredibly good news that we will now get to see things take shape following the closure and inconvenience that has caused for locals.

“This is a much-needed win for Panmure and we look forward to seeing the finished structure.”

Preparation work to set up sites for construction, a compound site for storing equipment, machinery and materials and vegetation removal commences on 21 August.

For the majority of the project, Panmure Basin walkway will remain open, with brief closures of up to one to two days at a time will be managed by traffic controllers to allow for truck and machinery movements.

Chainsaws and chippers will be whizzing through vegetation to make room for the structure, felling and mulching non-native plant species.

Planting and restoration are an important part of the project, so the project team is working closely with mana whenua to develop planting plans, and pest plant and weed eradication will support the restoration efforts of local community groups.

As for the main act – the fully manufactured steel bridge is expected to be lifted on to the site at the end of December 2024, during the public holidays when roads are likely to be quieter.

With the programme of works fully confirmed, deconstruction of the existing Jubilee Bridge has now been rescheduled for January 2025.

Panmure residents have not been able to cross Panmure Basin since Jubilee Bridge was closed in July 2023 due to safety issues.
