The 2024 Howick Sports Awards celebrated local athletic talent and honoured the vital roles of coaches, volunteers, and community supporters.

Funded by the board and now into its 11th year of operation, the event celebrates the wide array of the region’s local talents and their efforts over the past year.

Howick Local Board chair Damian Light shares, “East Auckland's presence is felt at every level - from local to global, each one dedicated to their craft - and we’re proud of their achievements. The awards night is a wonderful occasion where we gather to reconnect, share laughs and enjoy catching up with one another.

“We also recognise that these successes are driven by the unwavering support of coaches, administrators, and volunteers, and we celebrate their pivotal role in our community’s triumphs.”

Board funding of $25,000 allows two free tickets for all finalists, substantial price reductions for other guests, purchasing awards, a guest speaker, catering and administration costs.

The awards were held on Thursday 29 August at the Pakuranga United Rugby Club.

General Manager, Pakuranga United Rugby Club and Administer of the Howick Sports Awards Michael Bongiovanni adds, “The Howick Sports Awards is one of the sporting highlights of the year in East Auckland as the best of the best athletes, volunteers and administrators come together to celebrate.  We look forward to hosting the event again in 2025 and encourage all clubs and schools to consider nominating.”

“It was a great evening, with guest speaker Shaun Spillane who challenged us all to overcome our mental barriers and achieve our personal best. It’s a message that resonated with the athletes in the room who are achieving incredible outcomes.” Light says, “Congratulations to all the nominees and winners!”

The Supreme Winner was Ethan Olivier from Pakuranga Athletics Club. Although Ethan couldn’t attend the awards night due to his commitment at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, he achieved a remarkable victory there, clinching a gold medal in the triple jump!
