Cr Daniel Newman and Manurewa Local Board member Heather Andrew agree the 'super-weekend' approach will be less disruptive than staging roadworks over several weeks.

Work to deliver one of Manurewa Local Board’s key safety aims, an upgraded Weymouth / Coxhead Road intersection, is set to be super-sized.

Board chair Matt Winiata says Auckland Transport contractors will install lights at the well-known accident blackspot.

“They’ll also upgrade kerb and channels, install footpaths with pram crossings on all four intersection corners, lighting, drainage, road markings and signage.”

Fellow board member Heather Andrew visited the site ahead of two ‘super-weekends’.

“The initial stages of tree removal, stump grinding and undergrounding to power the signals is being done with partial access, but our first super-weekend - with work from 8pm tomorrow to 5am on Monday - will close the Weymouth / Coxhead / Rondorlyn Place area.”

She says traffic management and detours will be in place, and urges drivers to go another way, slow down and to follow signs and traffic directions.

The second super weekend is from 4-7 October and Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councillor Daniel Newman says while the closures will be inconvenient, the outcome will be a safer intersection.

“Auckland Transport will set up detours and traffic controllers will be on-site. The concentration of work over short but intensive periods will reduce the impact in a move that’s better than spreading work over many weeks.”
