Two workshops this month will help businesses prepare to survive emergencies.
Papakura Local Board chair Brent Catchpole says the board, Auckland Emergency Management, Papakura Community Resilience Network, the museum and local business associations have combined for the workshops, which will provide relevant information on negotiating an emergency.
“We know it’s only ever a matter of when, not if,” Catchpole says. “Gabrielle taught us we are vulnerable, so anything we do to be ready puts us in a better position to ride out emergencies.”
He says the Community Resilience Network is doing good work in establishing on-the-ground plans at a neighbourhood level.
“Now it’s time to see if we can’t inspire businesses to do the same. It’s critical they are ready because what happens if there are no stores, no food being produced, or no fuel?”
The workshops at Papakura Museum run back-to-back from 6-8pm on 20 November. The first deals with emergency readiness, determining what hazards could affect us, and their impacts.
“What happens if you get stuck at work?” Catchpole says. “How do you operate? This is a practical workshop focused on planning to give your business a better chance of recovering quickly, delivered by Auckland Emergency Management’s Greg Morgan.”
The second workshop covers understanding environmental change.
“Everyone talks about how the weather is changing, so the second session brings together some of the latest information and shares real examples of what Papakura and other communities are doing to prepare in the face of a disrupted climate.”
