Two much-loved, public central Auckland spaces are getting a revamp, with each recently reaching a milestone in the planning process.
Heard Park
The consenting process for the renewal of Heard Park in Parnell is underway after Waitematā Local Board approved the latest design.
“Once completed, Heard Park will be a more inviting space for the community to come together,” says local board chair Genevieve Sage.
“We’ve listened to your feedback and we’re excited to confirm that swings will indeed be included in the new design. Among other elements, we’re also adding a playful art piece which had overwhelming support from locals.”
The design was developed considering feedback from community and iwi engagement carried out in 2021, as well as input from stakeholders and the local board.
Further engagement will be included in the resource consenting phase.
Leys Institute
The Leys Institute seismic strengthening and renewal project is also continuing to the next stage, with the developed design going ahead in 2025.
The Leys Institute is made up of two iconic heritage buildings in Ponsonby, consisting of a gymnasium and a library. In 2019 it was deemed earthquake-prone and closed to the public.
In July 2024, Auckland Council confirmed partial funding for earthquake strengthening, with the rest of the restoration and modernisation project being funded by the local board.
The board recently approved a revised concept design which will keep the project within the available budget, while still catering to the needs of the growing local community.
A timeline was presented to the local board which indicates the Leys Institute will reopen to the public in 2028 once the project is completed. The board has requested a tighter timeframe if possible.
