Arriving in the picturesque Albert-Eden Local Board area in the first time can be an exciting – and also challenging – time, especially for migrants, former refugees and international students.
To make that transition easier for newcomers into the Albert-Eden community, the local board has adopted a Welcoming Plan as part of the Welcoming Communities programme.
Welcoming Communities is an international programme led in Aotearoa/New Zealand by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to assist councils and their communities to create more welcoming and inclusive environments for newcomers to their area.
Albert-Eden Local Board first joined the programme in 2022, with the programme now looking at trialling ways to assist migrants, former refugees, and international students in the area.
“We’re proud to live and work in the amazing suburbs that make up the Albert-Eden area, however we want everyone to enjoy it here, and when you’re new to any environment it can be difficult to integrate and feel connected,” says Albert-Eden Local Board chair Kendyl Smith.
“By being part of the fantastic Welcoming Communities programme the local board is helping to assist any newcomers by providing support, information and opportunities, showcasing our commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.”
Whau, Kaipatiki and Otara-Papatoetoe local boards have also joined Welcoming Communities programme, which forms part of the wider Welcoming International programme, which is a coalition of initiatives in six additional countries (United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia.)
