Epsom’s Greenwoods Corner will become a safer and better-connected town centre following a much-needed transport upgrade to be completed by the second quarter of 2025.
Greenwoods Corner, an area located between Epsom and Royal Oak at the intersection of Pah Road and Manukau Road, is a thriving shopping village with restaurants, cafés, and retail businesses.
However, the current triangle-shaped layout of the intersection is unique because of the angle that Pah Road and Manukau Road connect, with kerbside parking located inside the intersection.
To improve safety for pedestrians, and to create easier connections, the Albert-Eden Local Board has allocated $547,000 to the upgrade Auckland Transport will deliver.
Chair Kendyl Smith is pleased the project is moving ahead and says the upgrades will enhance the popular centre.
“It’s great to kick off 2025 with these critical improvements to the popular and well-used Greenwoods Corner town centre,” says Kendyl.
“To get to this point we’ve had robust conversations with all stakeholders, and initially it was proposed five parking spaces would have to go, however, after working closely with Auckland Transport and the community, we’ve retained four parking spaces, and added a new parking space into the layout, so the new design is not only safer, but we’re ensuring businesses can keep the parking spaces they require. It’s great to land on a final design that suits the different needs of Greenwoods Corner.”
Dominique Bonn, President of the Greenwoods Corner Epsom Business Association, says the upgrades will be a welcome addition to the area.
“I’m really pleased we’ve managed to land on a design that’s going to best-serve our community and the different users of Greenwoods Corner,” says Dominique.
“This work and its upgrades have been a long-time coming, and there’s been lots of constructive planning culminating in a final design that will provide safer and improved connections for a thriving Greenwoods Corner.”
New and improved design for Greenwoods Corner
Once completed, the revised layout for Greenwoods Corner includes:
-
A new traffic-light controlled crossing near 571 Manukau Road.
-
Realignment of the existing staggered crossing with traffic lights at 582 Manukau Road to a standard crossing with traffic lights.
-
Rebuilding footpaths and installing yellow pavers to improve connections and road crossings.
-
Extending the kerb at the north-east corner of the intersection so it’s safer for pedestrians and to reduce the distance between one side of the signalised crossing and the other.
-
Installing new signage and paint new road markings to support the proposed changes.
The work is expected to commence in March.
