Heavy rain is expected in Auckland on Friday 11 July.

Aucklanders are being asked to plan ahead for a rainy commute home with this morning’s wintery weather to continue throughout the day and much of tonight. The peak of the rain expected to hit during the commute home later this evening.

A front is moving across the country on Friday and Saturday morning bringing heavy rain and gales to many areas, including Auckland.

MetService has issued two separate Heavy Rain Warnings for Auckland and Great Barrier Island, effective from 6am today (Friday 11 July) until 2am tomorrow (Saturday 12 July).

Plan ahead for your commute

General Manager, Auckland Emergency Management Adam Maggs reminds Aucklanders that now’s the time to prepare and plan ahead.

“As well as a windy day today, we’re expecting a few heavy showers during Friday, with the greatest risk of downpours between about 6pm and 10pm. This may be when many Aucklanders will be heading home or on the road, so drive safely, plan your journey and avoid or take special care in low-lying areas. And never drive in floodwaters,” says Adam.
“Remember, you can download the MetService app to keep an eye on local weather conditions and receive important notifications. Also make MetService.com a favourite for the latest weather updates, including the Rain Radar. Stay safe and keep in touch with whānau and friends – and if you feel you or your property are at risk, don’t hesitate – call 111 immediately.”

You can also visit the Auckland Emergency Management website or the Get Ready website for advice on getting your household prepared for an emergency.

What Aucklanders can do:

  • If travelling today, plan your journey, drive to the conditions and allow extra time. Drive carefully and never drive through floodwater.
  • Stay up to date with weather forecasts and check AT and NZTA’s journey planners for any public transport and roading disruption.
  • Keep drains and gutters on your property clear. For blockages or issues with the public stormwater network, phone the council on 09 301 0101.
  • Bring rubbish, recycling and foodscraps bins in as soon as you can after they’re emptied.
  • For tree damage on public land, go to the council’s website and ‘report a problem’ online.
  • Check your emergency readiness supplies, just in case of power outages.
