- Kaipātiki Local board makes landmark allocation of $1,065,900 into local environmental initiatives.
- Funds to environmental heroes Kaipātiki Project and Pest Free Kaipātiki have more than doubled.
- New environmental initiatives focused on water quality are also on the way for the Kaipātiki community.
Kaipātiki residents can rest assured their environment is a top priority following the local board’s landmark allocation of $1,065,900 towards to its environmental initiatives for the 25/26 financial year.
This is the largest amount the board has ever allocated to its Environmental Programme to deliver a range of real-world initiatives to benefit the Kaipātiki community.
The bulk of the allocation goes to help with increased costs and new initiatives for local environmental heroes Kaipātiki Project, who will receive $265,000 and Pestfree Kaipātiki with funding of $525,300.
“This unprecedent level of support is going to make a huge difference to our volunteers, staff, and our local environment in backing the work we do to engage and connect the community in restoring the natural environment. Huge thanks to the board for their continued help,” says Annie Dignan, General Manager Pest Free Kaipātiki.
The board will also be backing some new initiatives in the plan including:
Catchment Stewardship: Restoring Streams through Community Engagement -$25,000
Trial project to engage with private landowners near Castleton Stream, a catchment affected by the 2023 storm events, encouraging them to ‘adopt’ a section of stream to help existing volunteer groups to monitor, clean and replant these sections alongside organised planting days to stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and replace invasive species with natives.
Onepoto Pond Water Quality - $50,000
Following the algal outbreak in this popular pond last summer, the board has set aside funds for algae controlling methods in case of another algal bloom. The funds can be reallocated if they aren’t needed.
Wai Care Programme Kaipātiki - $25,000
Designed to engage the next generation of environmentalists, this practical education program will teach students from four Kaipātiki schools how to assess and plan to improve the water quality in their local awa (stream). Local environmental groups and iwi will also be involved.
