As the city wraps up warm against the winter cold, the Sky Tower also wrapped up warm last weekend to usher in a new winter festival.
The intricate neon stitches of Lissy and Rudi Robinson-Cole’s extraordinary Wharenui Harikoa – crocheted with aroha – could be seen shining brightly on the Sky Tower.

This light projection marked a homecoming season for Wharenui Harikoa, presented by Auckland Live at The Civic until 27 July.
It also launched SkyCity’s Winter Fest - a glittering parade of art which is lighting up Federal Street until 6 August. SkyCity’s Winter Fest, supported by Auckland Council and the city centre targeted rate, is turning the Sky Tower and Federal Street into a vibrant explosion of mid-winter colour – interactive, uplifting and FREE.
Young creatives have also been given a giant winter canvas to project onto as the month-long festival plays out.
This new mid-winter midtown festival will keep the city centre humming, in the weeks after 2025’s Matariki Festival closes on 13 July. Check out the last week of Matariki show-stoppers this week at Our Auckland.
