Tsunami update: Auckland is no longer under threat
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has advised that the potential for tsunami activity around the coast of Aotearoa New Zealand is no longer a threat, and all advisories have been lifted.
Auckland Emergency Management has returned to its normal monitoring status. Beach and marine tsunami conditions were observed across the east coast of New Zealand last night (Thursday), but they have now subsided to strong and unusual currents.
Although the National Advisory for the North and South Islands has been lifted, strong and unusual currents will continue for the next 20 to 48 hours.

Civil Defence Centres closed: tsunami advisory still in place
Auckland Emergency Management has closed the four Civil Defence Centres (CDCs) activated last night in Tāmaki Makaurau. While the country is still under a national advisory for tsunami activity, support centres for live-aboard boaties are no longer needed.
Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group Controller Mace Ward says that as of this morning, there were minimal impacts reported across the Auckland region.
“It was great to see Aucklanders taking note of the updates issued yesterday, following our advice and seeking refuge when needed to keep themselves safe.
“We hosted two boaties at our Waiheke Civil Defence Centre overnight,” says Mr Ward.
“Auckland Transport has advised that public transport services are operating as normal in Tāmaki Makaurau today. Ferries have been running to schedule but it’s always a good idea to check live departures in the AT mobile app or online Journey Planner before you travel in case strong currents cause delays or cancellations.
"This is a good reminder for Aucklanders on the importance of being prepared. Remember, if you or your property are in danger phone 111 – don't wait, natural warnings like rising floodwaters need to be acted on immediately,” says Mr Ward.

Tsunami threat: Civil Defence Centres open for live-aboard residents
Auckland Emergency Management will open four Civil Defence Centres for residents who live aboard marine vessels and need alternative shelter overnight.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a national advisory on tsunami activity following an earthquake off the east coast of Kamchatka Russia this morning.
Strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore are expected to affect New Zealand (all coasts) from around midnight tonight.
Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group Controller Mace Ward says standing up Civil Defence Centres (CDCs) offers a back-up option for people whose primary residence is on the water and who are unable to shelter with friends or whānau this evening.
“If you live aboard a vessel in the Auckland region, we strongly advise you to find an alternative place to stay this evening.
“If you can’t shelter with friends or whānau, please make your way to one of our Civil Defence Centres which will be open from early evening, until 8am on Thursday.
“These centres will offer basic facilities like shelter and light snacks and some basic sleeping options like inflatable mattresses.
“Please bring warm clothing, essential items like medicines, baby and children’s items, and special food items,” he says.
All Civil Defence Centres are wheelchair accessible and a small number of pets can be accommodated.
