The next stage in deciding whether Auckland might move to fortnightly rubbish collections will get underway with public consultation opening in October.
The public’s feedback will help councillors decide whether to proceed with a proposed six-month long trial of fortnightly kerbside rubbish collections. If approved, the trial would begin in February 2026 and include approximately 10,000 households.
Auckland Council has selected three areas – parts of Te Atatū Peninsula, Panmure / Tāmaki and Clendon Park / Weymouth – for the proposed trial.
Consultation will open from 13 to 31 October 2025, giving Aucklanders the chance to provide feedback on the proposed trial. More information on the proposal will be available in the consultation materials. Affected households and ratepayers will be contacted directly about the proposal to seek their feedback.
Justine Haves, Auckland Council’s General Manager of Waste Solutions, says the trial is a chance to test the feasibility of rolling out a fortnightly rubbish collection service across Auckland.
“This trial offers a chance to listen to our communities, understand their needs, and learn how we can reduce rubbish to landfill in a way that works for Aucklanders.
“Our goal is to make smart, informed decisions that support both our people and our environment, for a more sustainable Tāmaki Makaurau,” says Ms Haves.
Decisions timeline and background – fortnightly rubbish collections
- In October 2024, Auckland Council’s Policy and Planning Committee agreed to consult with affected ratepayers and residents on a proposed trial of fortnightly kerbside rubbish collections.
- Feedback from the October 2025 consultation on the proposed trial will be reported to a relevant council committee in December 2025 and will inform the elected members’ decision on whether to proceed with a trial in early 2026.
- If the trial proceeds as proposed, it will run from February to August 2026.
- Ratepayers in the trial areas would receive a rates remission and participating households would be supported throughout the trial with information, tools and tips to help make the transition easier. Detail will be set out in the consultation materials.
- Any decision to roll out fortnightly rubbish collections across the wider Auckland region would be consulted on as part of the 2027 Long-term Plan process. No regional rollout would take place before 2028.
