Local skaters are dropping in like its hot at Onehunga’s new flow bowl.
Sitting perched above the picturesque Onehunga Bay Reserve, the bowl has scenic lagoon views and is another eye-catching addition to the popular reserve.
Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Chair Debbie Burrows believes the bowl will be a popular site for community connection.
“There’s a scarcity of high-quality, multi-purpose, bowl facilities in Auckland. We’re pleased to have another great addition to the popular Onehunga Bay Reserve. This is a fantastic place for the community, especially for our youth to get together, practice on their bike, scooter, blades or skateboard.”
“It’s rewarding to see the completion of the flow bowl. It takes a fair bit of time to plan, fund, design and engage with all relevant stakeholders to get to this point. Originally the bowl was supposed to be finished last year, but with funding changes it got pushed out. However, it’s worth the wait and I’m pleased we have something to be proud of,” says Debbie.
Onehunga Bay Reserve has had a number of upgrades over the past decade, and the new flow bowl solidifies the reserve as a destination location.
All inclusive: design detail unlocks options
At the reserve there’s also a wooden vert ramp for skaters, however, the ramp suits more experienced users.
The design for the new flow bowl suits intermediate to advanced skill levels, and features a variety of design options, including: quarter pipes, flat banks and a complex jump box, with heights ranging from 1-2 metres.
The layout allows for progression and skill development, making it accessible for beginners while still challenging for experienced skaters.
Other features include a shade shelter, and seating area surrounds the active zone for spectators, giving family, friends and visitors a space to relax and enjoy the sights from nearby.
Staff also worked closely with skaters and designers to ensure the space would work for a range of ages and abilities. There is also drainage in place, given the deep nature of the site.
The bowl is an example of the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board following its 2024 adoption of the wheeled play network study, which promoted future investment into play, such as scootering, skating, biking and more.
