Roll into the fun at Riverhead Skatepark

Whether arriving on a scooter, trying a first ramp or looking for a fun day out with the whānau, the Riverhead community is invited to a family fun day celebrating the new skatepark.

Finished earlier this year, the upgraded skatepark at Riverhead War Memorial Park has quickly become a popular destination for locals of all ages.

The redevelopment provides a modern, easy‑to‑use facility designed for scooters, skateboards and bikes.

Rodney Local Board Chair Guy Wishart says the skatepark is already an important local facility.

“It’s been great to see so many people using the skatepark since it opened. Skateparks are important community spaces where young people can be active, learn new skills and spend time with friends, and this one is already doing that for Riverhead.”

Free family fun event

The community is invited to a community celebration on Saturday 23 May, from 10am to 12pm.

Families can enjoy a fun morning with bouncy castles, face painting, a Spiderman appearance and bubble show, along with a skate class run by Young Guns.

Te rōpū kapa haka o Te Kura o Riverhead will be performing at the event. With over 140 students, the kapa haka group is a strong representation of the kura, with tamariki who show mana, strength, and pride in every performance.

There is a free sausage sizzle, plenty of skating to watch, and opportunities for people to get involved or try something new. Bring your skateboard or scooter, catch up with neighbours and enjoy the atmosphere.

Skatepark design

The skatepark was designed and delivered by RICH Landscapes, with a strong focus on flow, usability and value for money.

An in‑situ concrete layout has been paired with FLOW skate features, keeping down construction costs while offering a range of skateable elements. Banks, quarter pipes, ledges, rails and rollovers allow riders to move smoothly through the park and progress at their own pace.

A sculpture by artist Levi Hawken installed beside the kicker, doubles as a skate feature and adds a distinctive local identity to the space.

More skatepark upgrades

Construction is underway at Muriwai Village Green on a purpose built wheel play area, with a flow bowl and plaza‑style features for riders of all abilities.

Future skatepark upgrades are planned for Huapai Domain and Snells Beach, and community consultation will follow.

Wishart says the skatepark shows the value of well‑designed recreational spaces.

“This skatepark has quickly become a real asset for Riverhead, and it’s great to see it being used and enjoyed every day.”
