For generations of young people in Sunnynook, Scouts has been a place to learn new skills, build confidence and make lasting friendships.

That tradition will continue, with the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board approving a new long-term lease for Sunnynook Scouts at Sunnynook Park. The lease gives the group certainty to continue delivering programmes that support local young people and families.

The new lease provides a 10-year term, with a further 10-year right of renewal, allowing Sunnynook Scouts to plan and grow their activities into the future.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Trish Deans says supporting community organisations that invest in young people is an important part of the board’s role.

"Scouting plays an important role in helping young people build confidence, develop practical skills and form lasting friendships. We’re proud to support groups like Sunnynook Scouts that create opportunities for young people to grow, learn and connect with their community."

Sunnynook Scouts offers a structured programme of adventure-based learning that helps young people develop teamwork, responsibility and confidence. The group welcomes boys and girls across three age groups, from younger Keas through to Cubs and Scouts, with regular weekly meetings, camps and outdoor activities held throughout the year.

“We’re delighted that the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board has granted us a new lease for the hall. Sunnynook Scout Group has been part of the community since 1979, and this gives our group long-term certainty to continue the legacy started by our founders. Today around 85 young people take part in our Kea, Cub and Scout programmes, supported by a fantastic team of leaders and volunteers who help young people grow in confidence, leadership and adventure,” says Sunnynook Scout Group Leader Darin Hutcheson.

The group is run by dedicated volunteers, many of whom are parents, who help create a supportive environment where young people can learn new skills and take part in adventures close to home.

With the new lease in place, Sunnynook Scouts can continue supporting future generations of young people and contributing to the life of the Sunnynook community for years to come.
