Ross Clow on Avondale’s Hollywood Cinema

A word from Ross Clow, Whau ward councillor

It’s great news that the Hollywood Cinema has been sold and the new owner intends to keep it as a cinema.

The class B heritage building began its life as the Avondale Town Hall and has screened everything from silent movies to today’s digital projection.

Built in 1915 this neo-classical building is the earliest example of cinema in Auckland. It has a fascinating history and has been home to the Wurlitzer Organ for the past 35 years.

As Avondale continues to develop, it is wonderful to see that landmark historical features such as the Hollywood Cinema are set to remain key features of the urban landscape.
