Road safety upgrades on the way for Blockhouse Bay and New Lynn
The roundabout at Blockhouse Bay

Two new road safety projects have been given the green light by Whau Local Board.

The roundabout in Blockhouse Bay town centre is in line for an $800k safety upgrade, while a pedestrian crossing will be added at Veronica Street in New Lynn over time.

Blockhouse Bay

The upgrade to the Blockhouse Bay roundabout will see the addition of a new zebra crossing as well as raising the existing zebra crossings, kerb buildouts and changing the road surface to high friction.

These improvements will improve safety by lowering speeds, reducing driver confusion and encourage increased use of active transport modes such as walking and cycling in the area.

Whau Local Board Chair, Tracy Mulholland says the improvements are much needed.

“Improving the safety provision at these locations will be of great benefit to pedestrians and road-users in Blockhouse Bay and New Lynn.”

Money available to Whau Local Board through Auckland Transport’s Community Safety Fund will fully fund the Blockhouse Bay Roundabout safety upgrade.

Veronica Street

The balance of available funds will be allocated to contribute to a new pedestrian crossing with a raised table at Veronica Street, close to Lynn Mall.

This is a very busy area for pedestrian traffic with no current safe crossing point for shoppers walking to and from the mall and the train station.

The new crossing is estimated to cost $260,000 - some of which may be funded from the local board’s 2020-23 transport capital fund.
