Before there was a car in every garage, the steam ferries reigned supreme. They were the queens of the Waitematā and transported thousands of passengers out to see the Anniversary Regatta and to North Shore beaches or islands on annual excursions for workplaces, churches, unions, clubs, and societies.
The last survivor of this fleet, the steam ferry Toroa, is being lovingly restored and readied to take more generations on a voyage to explore the harbour's maritime and ecological heritage – and this time burning renewable fuel. Come and see her progress in her centennial year and find out how you can join the crew and contribute to her story.
