Northcote town centre, selected as one of 19 development locations by Auckland’s new urban regeneration agency, Panuku Development Auckland, is an "under-rated jewel" says the agency’s Strategy and Engagement Director David Rankin.
He says Panuku Development recognised the potential of Northcote and has instituted a plan to upgrade the town centre to improve its safety, amenities and connections with local homes.
“Northcote is a thriving multi-cultural town centre with a variety of community facilities. It is also attractive because of its proximity to the Harbour Bridge and Auckland's Central Business District.”
The Kaipātiki Local Board received feedback from the local community that the town centre needs to be revitalised and that there is opportunity for higher density and improved social housing.
The area is also part of the Northcote Strategic Special Housing Area, which has the potential to create 700 new housing sites.
Housing New Zealand owns a large section of the surrounding area, and is planning to upgrade the quality and quantity of their housing. This will be implemented through collaboration with Panuku, other central government agencies and the Auckland Council family.
Kaipātiki Local Board chair Kay McIntyre celebrates the selection of Northcote as an unlock location, describing it as a "great opportunity" for the town centre.
