The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) has designated Aotea Great Barrier Island an International Dark Sky Sanctuary. The designation was marked with an official event held on the island on Saturday 19 August.
Great Barrier is the first island in the world, and one of only three places, to receive dark-sky status.
