"We’ve done it! Penlink will be built within the next 10 years," says Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Chair Julia Parfitt.
“We’ve had overwhelming public support to get on with Penlink and this has carried the day. Our local board has advocated strongly for this project over many years. An early delivery of Penlink will take some of the pressure off the heavily congested route through Silverdale.
“As recently as last week, the local board reiterated support for the tolled and public transport options and for the four-lane option. It’s very gratifying that Minister of Transport, Hon Phil Twyford has acted on the excellent business case put forward and in the first year of the new government’s term.
“Penlink will be two lanes, it will now be future proofed and can be expanded later to four lanes. The government will allocate $200 million to Penlink which will be built as a public-private partnership.
“I’d also like to acknowledge all the hard work and unstinting support the local board has received especially from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and Michael Barnett. The backing of local MPs Tracey Martin and Marja Lubeck has also helped to get it across the line.”
Penlink is a 7km, two-lane toll road linking Whangaparāoa Peninsula with State Highway 1 at Redvale. It is one of the projects listed in the Auckland Transport Alignment Project which represents Auckland Council and the government’s agreement to invest $28 billion in transport infrastructure over the 2018-2028 period.
