A new marine refit facility will be developed in Wynyard Quarter, creating hundreds of jobs and delivering significant marine and tourism spending.
The facility on Beaumont and Jellicoe corner, known as Site 18, will progress after an agreement between Panuku Development Auckland and marine services company Orams, and will feature a marine refit facility capable of handling vessels up to 620 tonnes – 85 per cent of the world marine market.
A commercial building and a residential tower will complete the development, which will also provide increased maintenance facilities for ferries, fishing and commercial vessels.
Panuku chief executive Roger MacDonald says the development meets the objectives of the 2012 Waterfront Plan.
“Panuku remains committed to retaining a vibrant marine industry in Wynyard Quarter.”
Orams’ proposal has the potential to deliver significant economic benefits and the marine elements should be completed in time for the next America’s Cup in early 2021.
Orams Marine CEO Neven Barbour says this is a unique mix of marine and residential uses. “This proposal is the result of numerous studies focused on adding sustainable value to the marine industry and Auckland’s economy.”
Managing director Craig Park says the marine sector is an important economic contributor for Auckland. “This will create more than 500 jobs and generate significant income.”
