Waitākere Ranges residents with septic tanks are being urged to attend a special information session on the proposed phasing out of the septic tank pump-out service.
As part of this year’s Annual Budget, the council is proposing to phase out the sewerage service and targeted rate and replace it with a regional compliance programme.

The session, which will be held on Sunday 24 February from 10am-12pm at the Huia Community Hall, 1253 Huia Rd, will provide Waitākere Ranges residents with the chance to come and talk to council experts about the proposed changes and learn how it could affect them.
Waitākere Ranges board member Ken Turner says it is important for people to come along to find out more.
“These proposed changes will likely have an impact on around 4300 properties in the Waitākere Ranges Local Board area. This session will provide the opportunity for residents to come and learn more about the issue and how it could affect them.
“As well as board members, there will be experts on hand from the council to talk through the proposed changes so that people can consider the issue before providing feedback.
“We felt this was an important thing to do for our community so this specific information event will no doubt be really helpful for people to understand the proposals. We will also take informal feedback at the session.”
If accepted, Waitākere households with septic tanks would stop paying the $194.54 per year charge to have the pump-out service, and instead need to purchase a pump-out service from a private contractor. These charges can vary depending on location as well as conditions of the tank and the site.
For easier sites, costs can be as low as $350 ($116.66 per year over three years), but some owners may face higher costs.
The board is also planning on arranging an event in Piha later during the consultation. Details will follow once confirmed.
