Work is progressing on a new, safer path for pedestrians and cyclists which will provide a link under the SH18 motorway, as part of the NZ Transport Agency's Northern Corridor Improvements project.

The Alexandra Underpass will become a new feature and transport link from Rook Reserve in Unsworth Heights, connecting people to local paths and into the industrial estate on the other side of the motorway.

The new path will replace the old underpass and will be built to withstand one-off flooding events.

It also features safer and wider entrances with a clear view to the other side, lighting and CCTV cameras to improve security.

The existing underpass will stay open during construction of the new underpass and the SH18 motorway lanes.

When the new path opens in 2021, the old underpass will be converted to a stormwater culvert and closed off.

The new underpass is being built with funding from Auckland Transport, Auckland Council and the NZ Transport Agency.
