A brand new playground renewal is on the way for Western Springs Lakeside Te Wai Ōrea Park.
The renewed playground will have an ecological theme to fit with its surroundings and include play equipment and play zones suitable for children of all ages.
Meandering pathways between the play zones will double as beginner bike riding tracks. New and improved pathways, seating, BBQs, drinking fountains, shade sails and shade trees will also feature.
Accessibility is prioritised with a combination of new surfaces introduced and removal of steps and ridges to make sure wheelchairs, prams and those with impaired mobility can use the play area easily.
The concept comes from the draft Western Springs Lakeside Te Wai Ōrea Park Development Plan which was funded by Waitematā Local Board and publicly consulted on in 2018.
Waitematā Local Board chair Pippa Coom says the playground design aligns with key themes in the draft plan; water, ecology, refuge, connection, events and history.
The renewal has been allocated a budget of $1,472,802, which includes $590,000 from Waitematā Local Board’s Locally Driven Initiative Capex fund.
The playground is expected to be completed in July 2020.
