Road safety improvements are to be expanded into new neighbourhoods in Manurewa Local Board and Auckland Transport project.
Manurewa Local Board chair Joseph Allan says COVID-19 impacted work in the Wordsworth Quadrant, but that project is now back on track.
Good results are being reported from measures already installed to stop traffic speeding through the area, which features high pedestrian numbers, particularly schoolchildren.
“With Auckland Transport, we are now looking at safety measures within the area bordered by Weymouth, Mahia and Great South roads because we want to repeat what we have achieved in the Wordsworth Quadrant.
“Residents in those areas have long called for improvements because they have seen the crashes and the speeding, and they know how many people walk to the schools, churches, shops and parks," Joseph Allan says.
The number of deaths and serious injuries on Auckland’s roads continues to increase.
“Our stats show 80 per cent of deaths and serious injuries happen on 50kmh urban roads, and nearly half of those hurt or killed are vulnerable road users, that’s our children, our older people and cyclists.”
In the Wordsworth Quadrant, a major roundabout upgrade at the Wordsworth Rd/Rowandale Ave has been completed and work is now underway to add another four speed tables at addresses along Rowandale, and two more on Wordsworth.
Auckland Transport is prioritising specific areas where speed-calming is most required. That approach recognises that speed-calming supports greater safety across a wider residential area.
AT is working on a final design for the area and will seek feedback from those living in the area.
