Auckland Council has a role in looking after animals across the region, including registering, identifying and protecting against pests, helping Aucklanders adopt and even looking after our own farm animals.
Auckland's dogs
There are 112,530 dogs across the region registered with Auckland Council.
We've published a list of the most popular pooch names in Auckland this year - does your top the list?
We also have dogs working for us, rooting out the region's pests to help us protect our environment. You can read more about two of our newest recruits here.

Farming life
Auckland Council has nearly 1500 hectares of working coastal pastures across our 18 (farmed) regional parks. There are around 400 cattle and 5500 ewes who live on our farms across the region.
One great place to visit some of these animals is Ambury Farm. This regional park lies along the coast of the Manukau Harbour in the suburb of Mangere Bridge. You can take in various farm animals as you wander around the farm including: sheep, goats, cows, pigs, pet lambs (in season), chickens, turkey, rabbits and peacocks.
For a list of places where you can visit and enjoy our farm animals, visit the viewing farm animals page of the Auckland Council website.
Animal shelters
A total of 372 dogs were adopted from our Animal Shelters between July 2019 - June 2020.
