Members of Papakura’s immigrant communities have been praised for their outstanding COVID-19 lockdown efforts.
Papakura Local Board chair Brent Catchpole says many immigrants have made the area their home, adding to the cultural diversity Papakura holds so dear.
“We have seen quite incredible responses from mana whenua and the team at Papakura Marae, responses that have left me wondering just how the army of people involved maintain their energy levels and commitment.
“And the other area where we have seen amazing responses has been among some of our ethnic communities, particularly the Sikh community and the Supreme Sikh Society operating out of the Takanini Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib.
“Its food parcels have been a lifeline for many, not only within Papakura, but from surrounding areas and when the hurricane devastated parts of Papatoetoe and Wiri recently.
“They are offering food parcels for collection again this weekend, though it’s essential that people book so contactless collection can be maintained, and as whole, the Sikh community has been so generous for so long that we actually risk taking it for granted.
“There is no doubt whatsoever that Papakura would be the poorer for not having the temple at the centre of the community.”
Catchpole says Pasifika church communities have also done fine work among parishioners and neighbours, while businesses have also stepped up.
“Crush Fit owner Richie Leith Aholelei has been providing food and donating money and Bun Leng from Satay Noodle House, a big part of our community for more than 20 years, has taken to social media and come up with a way to provide meals for essential workers.
“Bung was recognised as a pandemic hero for his efforts, and is never shy to tell anyone how grateful he is for the life his family has been able to forge here since arriving as refugees from Cambodia.”
Catchpole is encouraging anyone yet to be vaccinated to take advantage of the Shot Cuz vaccination bus being at Papakura High School on Thursday and Friday.
There are kai pack incentives and prize draws and the access is open to anyone yet to be vaccinated.
“Everyone in our community is important to us and we don’t want to lose anyone, so if you still need your vaccination, the Shot Cuz crew will be delighted to help you.”
