With the city buzzing and summer in full swing, here's how you and your family can get out and enjoy everything central Auckland has to offer.
Take the ferry
Te Ngau o Horotiu, Auckland's ferry terminal, is a destination in itself. Check out the ropes of green-lipped mussels attached to the underside of the wharf at Te Wānanga, put there to filter seawater, remove pollutants and help regenerate Hauraki Gulf. Jumping on Kōrimurimu, the kete-style trampoline artwork by Tessa Harris, isn’t to be missed, either.
Visit North Head
A trip to Devonport isn’t complete without climbing North Head. The old military tunnels were dug by prisoners in the late 1880s as part of fortifications to protect the city from possible Russian attacks.
Explore even more great walks around the Auckland region - perfect for another day out with your family.
Lunch on the beach
A simple picnic lunch on Cheltenham Beach is followed by a dash into the water - it’s irresistible.
With rock pools, shelly bays and pōhutukawa-fringed paddling pools, our region offers a wealth of kid-friendly seaside experiences. Check out our list of five beaches perfect for younger children here.
Back to the central city
Wander through some of Auckland's newest downtown spaces, such as Te Komititanga, Galway Street and the restored Chief Post Office, then stop for a spot of shopping at Commercial Bay.
Potters Park
Take in the 5.6-metre Boy Walking sculpture of a child strolling purposefully across Potters Park, Sandringham. Work up an appetite on the playground and head to adjacent Dominion Road, Auckland’s answer to Chinatown, with its amazing array of food options. With a hungry family, dumplings are a great go-to dinner choice, and just about the perfect way to finish off a fun day out.
