All are invited to celebrate the opening and blessing for the upgraded Waikōwhai Park playground in Hillsborough with Puketāpapa Local Board on 18 December.

The playground has recently received a $580,000 upgrade, extending both ends of the playground – one at the top and the other at the bottom of the slide, which is expected to be complete in early December.

Located on the Western banks of the Manukau Harbour, Waikōwhai Park playground is already famous for its long metal hillside slide, stunning views, and native bush.

Puketāpapa Local Board chair, Ella Kumar says that the upgraded playground will add an extra dimension to the park.

“Waikōwhai Park has so much to offer the community, from its beautiful walks, views, and the fact that it is a significant ecological area, home to regenerating forest and abundant wildlife.

“It is well loved and appreciated by so many people, this playground upgrade will provide yet another reason to spend time in this beautiful place, and we can’t wait for it to be officially open.”

The project had experienced some setbacks while in progress, including the theft of some of the pieces, meaning some of the original elements that were going to be reused had to be completely replaced.

“Thankfully, we were able to incorporate those unforeseen costs into the renewal budget, and there has been no significant reduction in the improvements delivered,” explains Ahsan Kamal, project lead for Auckland Council Parks and Community Facilities team.

The official opening and blessing celebration takes place on Sunday 18 December 2022, 2-3.30pm.

All are welcome.
