Department of Conservation facilities throughout the upper North Island, including those on Hauraki Gulf islands and Great Barrier Island, have been closed to the public due to Cyclone Gabrielle.

These facilities, including visitor centres, huts, campsites, toilets, wharves and tracks, will stay shut until at least Monday 20 February to keep our staff and visitors safe.

Islands where DOC facilities and tracks are closed include:

  • Rangitoto and Motutapu
  • Motuihe
  • Motuora
  • Tiritiri Matangi
  • Moturekareka
  • Motutara
  • DOC reserves on Kawau and Waiheke Islands
  • DOC facilities including accommodation on Aotea/GBI

Tracks have not yet been assessed, and may be damaged with slips, washouts, fallen trees, or flooding.

We are asking boat owners to consider DOC facility, accommodation and track closures if you are planning to be out on the water this weekend.

Decisions on reopening facilities will be made once regional directors have had the opportunity to thoroughly assess the damage. This can only be done once it is safe to do so and will take some time.

Visitors should keep an eye on the dedicated page of the DOC website for weather-related updates.
