Chickens once again rule the roost on a restored mural at Albany’s Kell Park.
The mural located opposite the Albany Plunket Clinic was covered in graffiti and moss.
Upper Harbour Local Board Chair Anna Atkinson says the mural had become an eyesore and desperately needed a clean-up.
"We wanted to retain the mural even though the paint was badly faded, and the painting horribly tagged. No one knew the artist’s name, but it didn’t feel right to just paint over it.”
Auckland Council’s Graffiti Prevention Team came to the rescue and council contractors were able to clean the mural and remove most of the graffiti.
Fortunately, the contractor’s graffiti administrator is also an artist and she was able to give the chooks a much-needed makeover and match the paint colours as closely as possible.
“The colourful mural looks amazing and is a bright addition that is going to be enjoyed by everyone who visits the park,” says Anna Atkinson.
The mural has been coated with a graffiti-guarding product which should protect it for many years to come.
