A long-standing sports club in the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board area has just had its lease renewed.

The board has approved a new 10-year lease for the East Tamaki Rugby Club.

"East Tamaki has a long history in Ōtara. While that’s not a reason in itself to grant a lease, we also know there are a lot of kids who want to play rugby in the area", says local board chair Apulu Reece Autagavaia.

The club’s ground lease expired in June last year but was rolling over on a monthly basis until renewal.

Apulu adds, "Granting the lease means rugby continues to have a home in Ōtara, and our kids can stay local to play the sport they love."

Boards have the allocated authority relating to local recreation, sport, and community facilities, including on leasing matters.

Established in 1962, the club aims to promote, foster, and promote rugby in the East Tamaki district and greater Auckland region, activities that align with the board’s desire for a thriving, inclusive and safe community, and parks and facilities that meet people’s needs.

The club has about 200 members and is looking to introduce community and whanau activities to make the club a community hub for all to enjoy.
