More than 100 trees are being added to Manurewa and Papakura streets.
Papakura is getting 11 golden honey locust, five tulip, and nine oriental plane trees at King Edward Ave; and four red maple, 15 London plane, and three callery pear trees at Old Wairoa Road.
Manurewa will see 35 golden honey locust and a puriri added at Barney’s Road, and three more golden honey locust, and 24 London plane trees, at Marr Road.
Adding trees is part of Auckland Council’s move to increase canopy coverage through its Urban Ngahere (forest) Strategy.
Aerial pictures showed Manurewa and Papakura canopy cover was below average, with both areas then prioritised in the planting schedule.
Papakura Local Board chair Brent Catchpole says the strategy seeks to increase tree cover across all board areas to 30 per cent by 2050.
“We know our canopy coverage was considerably lower than many other areas, so we are delighted tom see more trees going in.
“Having more trees helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provides shading and cooling, lowers stormwater run-off, and provides additional wildlife habitat. On top of that, they just make the placer look a whole lot nicer.”
Manurewa chair Matt Winiata says council has planted hundreds of thousands of trees under the plan across the region.
“Not too many people in Manurewa are going to be upset to see their streets going greener. It’s a fantastic initiative.
“We have seen a lot of planting events but until now they have largely been in parks and reserves so seeing the plan changing streetscapes will be a big step forward.”
