Mayor Wayne Brown has appointed Manurewa-Papakura Councillor Angela Dalton chair of a new Community Committee, which will have a focus on community related programmes, including responsibility for the full regional grants programme.

“I couldn’t be more delighted than to have one of the hardest-working councillors I know as my deputy in Albert-Eden-Puketāpapa ward’s Councillor Julie Fairey.

“This new committee can make decisions without having to refer them back to a Committee of the Whole. This will be more efficient, avoiding delays and duplication.

“I'm stoked, at the opportunity, I know the mayor is committed to ensuring ratepayer funds aren’t wasted, so doing things ‘better, faster cheaper’ is a sensible approach and one I’m totally on board with.”

She says community is where her heart is, and was the reason she decided to progress from being a local board chair to a governing body role as a councillor.

“It’s important to take the voices of all the people in our community so that policy development helps achieve equity.”

Dalton retains her role as deputy to North Shore ward Councillor Richard Hills on a renamed committee that becomes the Policy and Planning Committee, and also picks up the deputy chair role to Franklin ward Councillor Andy Baker on the Southern Rural Strategy Working Group.

“Andy and Richard are also incredibly hard-working councillors, Andy has also become the new chair of Transport, Resilience and Infrastructure.”

Mayor Brown announced the changes to streamline decision-making and focus on delivering the new Long-term Plan (LTP).

“Through the LTP process I received feedback that our structure wasn’t as efficient as it could be, and the changes made respond to that feedback and to align with our new management structure so councillors can have more effective oversight.”
